At Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) we coordinate the work on the scientific basics of the envisioned enzymatic polymer degradation. Inspired by nature’s solutions to degrade recalcitrant lignin, the research group investigates so-called peroxygenases to degrade non-natural polymers for which nature has not developed degradation strategies (yet). Natural enzymes and human-engineered enzymes are investigated for their degradation ability. Envisioning a circular economy approach also the degradation products are investigated for possible re-use as base chemicals to synthesise new products from them.
