Progresses in searching for resin chemical modifications able to ease the enzymatic degradation

The objective of BIZENTE project is to develop a multi-step degradation process to degrade thermoset materials at their end-of-life. To do so, BIZENTE partners are working in parallel in order to develop specific enzymes custom designed on the basis of reference resin and also to achieve chemical modification of the reference resins in order to [...]

Toxicity assessment in BIZENTE

Toxicity assessment is fundamental not only to guarantee the quality of a product and the safety of the process, but also from the point of view of environmental protection and the achievement of sustainable development objectives. For this reason, the University of Cadiz is studying the effects of the new, more biodegradable and sustainable products [...]

Lab scale trials on the enzymatic biodegradation of resins/composites

One of the main challenges that stand in front of our society is related to the economic structure and, in particular, these challenges embrace how to evolve the economy architecture from a linear system toward circular networks of feedstock and products. In this vision, a strong interconnection between the recycling of end-of-life products and production [...]

Frank Hollmann: “BIZENTE opens up an important application for ligninases to contribute to a more sustainable Europe. It is exciting being part of such a bold endeavor”

Frank Hollmann studied Chemistry (University of Bonn, Germany) and received his PhD from the Swiss Federal University of Technology (ETH Zurich) in 2004 with Andreas Schmid and Bernard Witholt as promotors. After a postdoctoral stay with Manfred Reetz (Max-Planck Institute for Coal Research, Germany) and some years as R&D manager at Evonik Industries [...]

BIZENTE is designing an innovative degradation chain for recycling durable resins

The main goal of BIZENTE project is the development of a recycling process addressed to thermoset epoxy and polyester-based polymers. The chemical and mechanical characteristics of this kind of materials favored their application in a wide range of different sectors, thanks to their unique features such as lightweight and flexible design. At the same time, [...]

Bizente in Media

During April, Bizente has appeared twice in the on-line press. Interempresas Magazine, an on-line publication in Spanish, specialised in industry and corporate news published the article entitled "Atiip coodinates a European project to biodegrade plastics using enzimes and to recycle aircrafts" which highlighted the biocatalytic model of enzymatic degradation to recover fibres and resins developed [...]

Customisation of selected ligninases for resin degradation

Being a main goal of BIZENTE, partner EvoEnzyme has been constructing mutagenic libraries of enzymes and analyzing individual engineered variants with improved activity on model molecules. Model molecules of the four selected resins (Hexflow®RTM6, Araldine®LY1568, DION®IMPACT9102 and R930A) were used as substrates on high-throughput screenings after several libraries were functionally expressed in S. cerevisiae. Figure [...]

The management of the innovation in BIZENTE

A very important aspect on the management of BIZENTE is to create a guide to help handling the innovation elements from the project. The first Innovation Plan (D6.3) formulates and programs these management activities and should be follow by all partners under the guidance of BIZENTE’s Innovation Board (BIB). Leading and coordinating Innovation, the board [...]
